Mountain View City Council to vote on El Camino plan

On Saturday, January 11, the City of Mountain View hosted a public workshop to get feedback on the El Camino Real Precise Plan. More than 150 dedicated Mountain View community members spent Saturday morning sharing their ideas for the four-mile stretch of El Camino Real that runs through the city.

Greenbelt Alliance and our partners, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and Peninsula Interfaith Action, kicked off the day with a pre-workshop meeting with over 20 local advocates to discuss their visions for El Camino. At the public workshop, attendees were introduced to the two versions of the plan in consideration and then broken up into smaller groups to discuss the merits of the two different growth strategies—uniform versus focused. We also discussed potential community benefits along the El Camino Real corridor such as pedestrian and bicycle amenities.

Attendees expressed strong support for the focused strategy, which would make it easier for the City to provide more homes affordable to a range of incomes, improve pedestrian safety, and create vibrant retail centers. Additionally, there was excitement about adding a protected bike lane on El Camino Real, which would make it much safer and enjoyable to bike along the corridor.

We believe that the El Camino Real Precise Plan can make Mountain View an even better place to live with:

  • New homes serving the whole community—from seniors to young professionals—and affordable at a range of incomes
  • Strong protections for low-income residents
  • Comfortable, inviting bicycle access for riders of all skill levels
  • Streets designed to provide safe transportation for walking, biking, driving, and taking transit

On Tuesday, February 4, the City Council will be voting on a preferred vision for the plan. Join us at the city council meeting in support of the focused strategy!
