Compact Development Team Volunteer |
Greenbelt Alliance is seeking qualified and motivated individuals with backgrounds
in planning and/or environmental review for a rewarding volunteer opportunity
as a Compact Development Team volunteer.
About Us
Greenbelt Alliance is the Bay Area's leading land conservation and urban planning
nonprofit. Our mission is to make the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area
a better
place to live by protecting the region's greenbelt and improving the livability
of its cities and towns. Since 1958, we have been active across the nine-county
region protecting open space, opposing sprawl, and promoting smart growth.
We
have helped save over 1.1 million acres of greenbelt and we're a leader in
promoting regional solutions to the problems of sprawl.
Responsibilities
The Compact Development Team volunteer attends monthly endorsement team meetings
in the Greenbelt Alliance San Francisco office and works with other team
members to evaluate projects submitted for endorsement by Bay Area developers.
Depending on availability, the volunteer will work with a small subcommittee (usually one other individual) of the compact development team to review a project and plug information gathered into a review template. As part of project review, the volunteer, along with the other sub-committee member, will meet the developer at the project site to take pictures and ask questions. With the other subcommittee member, the volunteer will present project review to the entire compact development team at a monthly meeting. The volunteer will discuss the project with the entire team with the goal of reaching consensus on whether or not Greenbelt Alliance should endorse the project.
Commitment
This position requires a monthly commitment of 2-10 hours for a minimum of
6 months.
Talents/Skills Desired
The ideal candidate will be a planner, architect, housing advocate, planning/urban
studies student, or social justice advocate.
Benefits
This position is an excellent opportunity to learn about local land use planning
in a hands-on, friendly setting. Volunteers will decide on endorsement of
developments that articulate Greenbelt Alliance values: Pedestrian-oriented,
transit accessible, efficient use of land, and affordable housing.
