East Bay Outreach, Policy Analyst, and Media Internship |

Alliance is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong interest
in media or public relations, communications, and/or environmental and
land use issues for an internship in our East Bay Office in Walnut Creek.
The Walnut Creek office is a convenient short walk from BART.
About Us
Greenbelt Alliance is the Bay Area's leading land
conservation and urban planning nonprofit. Our mission is to make the nine-county
San Francisco Bay Area a better place to live by protecting the region's
greenbelt and improving the livability of its cities and towns. Since 1958,
we have been active across the nine-county region protecting open space,
opposing sprawl, and promoting smart growth. We have helped save over 1.1
million acres of greenbelt and we're a leader in promoting regional solutions
to the problems of sprawl. Our East Bay Office is located in Walnut Creek
and focuses on land-use and public policy issues in Alameda and Contra Costa
County.
Responsibilities
The Outreach and Media Relation Intern will assist the East Bay Field Representative
in media-related needs pertaining to Greenbelt Alliance's work in Alameda and
Contra Costa Counties.
This will include:
1. Coalition Building: Help build and maintain coalitions through reaching
out to new groups. Coordinate activities, meetings and develop strategies to
achieve goals through coalitions. This includes outreaching to unions, churches,
schools, and other groups.
2. Policy analysis: Monitor and analyze development proposals by reading staff
reports and maintaining continual contact with local government staff for information.
Research other necessary documents to help with campaign planning. Attend city
council, board of supervisors and other events.
3. Media and event coordinator: Manage letter to the editor campaigns by writing
and publishing letters to the editors to help build volunteer base and increase
public attention on campaigns. Monitor and file newspaper clippings. Update
the website.
4. Volunteer outreach: Work with our allies to coordinate and conduct volunteer
outreach and activism. Develop leadership in current volunteers and find potential
volunteers. This includes individual personal contact, phone banking, e-mailing
action alerts, tabling, and attending community meeting events.
5. Expand, update and maintain volunteer database and use the database to outreach
to volunteers
Commitment
This internship requires a 10-40 hours/week commitment,
for at least 3 months. A longer commitment is highly encouraged. Scheduling
is at the intern's discretion. Ideally, the intern will be available at least
one night a month to attend a city council or community meeting. This position
is unpaid. This internship is
an ongoing opportunity available year round.

the environment through creating unprecedented relationships and public involvement
in the East Bay. In particular, the intern will have an essential role in
helping to protect the hills in the City of Pittsburg and the Concord Naval
Weapons Station. Both areas are extremely important to the region and are
in the beginning stages of the process where we can make a huge impact in
affecting decisions and the environment. Not only will the intern feel a
sense of accomplishment in embarking and creating changes in these cities,
but they will also gain essential skills for any job. The intern will expand
their networks, and be involved in a myriad of activities that will improve
communication, media, policy and grassroots organizing skills. The intern
will have both direction and independence to create opportunities for the
organization and the individual.
