Hiking the Headlands |
Saturday, April 3
10 AM to 3 pm
Rating: A moderately challenging hike of 5 miles with an 800 foot elevation gain.
Group: Open to all. Reservations required.
Status: SORRY, THIS OUTING IS FULL.
Fees: None
Leader: David D. Schmidt.
Notes: We’ll hike up the Coastal Trail for expansive views and descend Gerbode Valley as we enjoy one of the Bay Area’s best wildflower displays. Along the way, we’ll hear how the area was saved as open space in the face of plans for a massive sprawl development.
Rain Policy: This outing continues, rain or shine.
What to bring: Lunch, liquids, sturdy hiking shoes, and rain gear if necessary. Dress in layers.
How to get there:
From San Francisco:
Take Highway 101 north to Marin County and exit at Alexander
Ave. (second exit after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge). Stay to the right
on the exit ramp to get onto Alexander Ave. Turn left on Bunker Rd. (a brown
sign saying “Marin
Headlands Visitor Center” marks
the intersection). Go through the one-way tunnel and drive to the parking
lot at Rodeo Beach, approximately 3 miles ahead.
From the East Bay:
Take I-580 west to the
Richmond /San Rafael bridge. Cross the bridge. Take the second exit after the
bridge (Sir Francis Drake), go through Larkspur and get on 101 South. Follow
101 South through the Waldo tunnel. Take the last “Sausalito” exit, just
before the Golden Gate Bridge. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and pass
under Hwy101. At the stop sign, go straight onto Alexander Ave. Turn left
on Bunker Rd. (a brown sign saying “Marin
Headlands Visitor Center” marks the intersection), Go through the one-way
tunnel and drive approximately 3 miles to Rodeo Beach.
