Majestic Montara Mountain

Sunday, October 24
10 AM to 4 pm

Rating: This is a moderately strenuous hike of 8 miles with a 1,800-foot elevation gain.

Group: Open to all. Reservations required.

Status: Spaces available.

Fees: Park entrance fee ($5 or slightly higher) may be collected.

Leader: David D. Schmidt.

Notes: Join us on a scenic hike to the top of Montara Mountain, 1,898 feet above sea level. We’ll have lunch at the summit and enjoy the fruits of our exertions…spectacular views of the coastline.
A northern spur of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Montara Mountain features the only undisturbed Coastal Mountain Habitat found over 100 miles of coastline. It is an ecological island of natural biological diversity: Its steep slopes have minimized human impact, and it is home to plant and animal communities found no where else in the world. It is the barrier (or the protector) that has allowed the San Mateo mid-coast to retain its rural character - numerous attempts to build roads over the mountain have failed, and so heavier urban development moved to the bayside of the peninsula or much further south of the mountain

Rain Policy: The hike will continue rain or shine. The walk may be shortened in the event of rain.

What to bring: Lunch, water, and sturdy shoes. Dress in layers and bring rain gear in necessary.

How to get there:
We will meet at 10 am at the Visitor’s Center. Take Highway 280 to Highway 1. Take Highway 1 south to the City of Pacifica. Go south through the City of Pacifica to Pacifica State Beach, then turn left (east) onto Linda Mar Blvd. Follow Linda Mar Boulevard until it ends at Oddstad Boulevard. Turn right on Oddstad and proceed one block to the park entrance. Pay the parking fee, and meet at the Visitor’s Center.
