Rating: This is a moderate four to five mile hike combining the flat Bay Trail and urban walking with climbs totaling about 500 feet and two steep, rocky downslopes.

Group: Open to all. Reservations required.

Notes: Join us to explore the natural beauty and cultural history of Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline and the Point Richmond Historic District . Starting at Ferry Point where Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's first train arrived from Chicago in 1900, we'll hike a scenic stretch of San Francisco Bay Trail to Keller Beach and through a tunnel to explore the Point Richmond Historic District. Then, we'll ascend 371-foot high Nicholl Knob for views of Mounts Tamalpais, St. Helena and Diablo to hike the Crest Trail along the Portero Hills for panoramic vistas over San Francisco and San Pablo bays. After the hike, you may explore the Golden State Model Railroad Museum and/or the SS Red Oak Victory on your own.

What to bring: Lunch, liquids and sturdy shoes. Dress in layers. If you normally use hiking poles, it is recommended that you bring them.

How to get there: By car, take I-580 to exit at Canal Blvd. in Richmond. Go south (toward San Francisco Bay) one block to Cutting Blvd. and turn right at the Chevron gas station. Go two blocks on Cutting and turn left at the stop sign on Garrard Blvd. Drive through the Ferry Point tunnel to the end of Dornan Drive and turn right to enter the parking lot near the bay after the intersection with Brickyard Cove Road.
