Why is free parking a bad idea? Find out Feb. 24

It's time to have an honest conversation about the trade-offs communities make when they want abundant parking. Join UCLA Professor Donald Shoup and Greenbelt Alliance in San Jose for his talk about his book, The High Cost of Free Parking, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24th at San Jose City Hall.

Sprawl threat to Sargent Ranch drops

Big news for open space in South Santa Clara County! Sargent Ranch, which is south of Gilroy, is 6,500 acres of ranchlands and wildlife habitat. The owners, who for years have proposed building luxury homes and golf courses on this site, have filed for bankruptcy. Greenbelt Alliance supports the Santa Clara County General Plan policies that promote development only within existing urban areas, not on important open space.

Good news in the North Bay

Petaluma is going to ask voters to keep its good urban growth boundary to protect the vitality of its downtown and beautiful open space and farmland. On Nov. 2, residents can vote to extend the policy until 2025. Get involved!

Success! Court sides with Greenbelt Alliance
over Oakley's failure to protect farmland

In an important decision, a Superior Court judge ruled October 1 that the City of Oakley could not go forward with its plan to build housing until it addressed the impact of losing 1,600 acres of agricultural land.
