Nancy E. Adler: A Lifetime of Advancing Health Equity

We are sad to share that our dear friend and beloved former Board member, Nancy E. Adler has passed away. Nancy’s leadership in advancing health equity in the Bay Area will be deeply missed.

Dr. Adler was instrumental in documenting the powerful role that education, income and self-perceived status in society play in predicting health and longevity.

In 1977, Dr. Adler became a professor of medical psychology and a vice chairwoman of the psychiatry and pediatrics department at UCSF, in addition to directing the Center for Health and Community. She served on the Greenbelt Alliance Board of directors from 2003 to 2019, and retired in 2022 after a lifetime of commitment to advancing health justice.

Her leadership on the board played a key role in smart-growth development across the Bay Area and in safeguarding its precious open spaces. Her legacy lives on through our mission.

It is difficult to capture just how much Dr. Adler did for her community, the many organizations and people she dedicated her time and knowledge to, and the entire Bay Area region and health field that benefited from her work. Our condolences go out to Dr. Adler’s family and friends, as well as to all of those who knew Nancy and will miss her presence in this world.
