Livermore Downtown Theater

The City of Livermore is planning to build a new theater that will serve as a regional destination. As part of Livermore’s downtown Specific Development Plan process, Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center was chosen in 2004 to create a two-venue performing arts center.

This is another component of the Downtown Livermore Revitalization Project. The regional theater, expected to have seating for around 2,000, would attract approximately 300,000 to 400,000 visitors annually.

What's at Stake

The Revitalization Project is expected to generate more than $20 million in economic growth for Livermore and the surrounding area. As a regional attraction, the theater will draw in new businesses such as restaurants and specialty shops.

The proposal displays Livermore’s commitment to focusing on its downtown for new development, creating a more vibrant, walkable city center. Current and future residents will be able to enjoy world-class performing arts within walking distance of home.

Public participation is a vital component in ensuring the successful revitalization of downtown Livermore. Together, we can help promote a lively, pedestrian-friendly community.

What You Can Do

Email Greenbelt Alliance’s East Bay Field Representative Christina Wong to receive updates on the project’s progress.

Attend a City Council meeting to support the proposed theater. See Livermore's calendar of upcoming meetings.

Write a letter to the Livermore City Council saying that you support the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center and the revitalization of downtown.

Campaign Update

June 2008
Consultants released their peer-reviewed financial plan for the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center. Local residents provided overwhelming support for the project at the City Council and Redevelopment Agency’s May 22 meeting. Potential economic impacts of the proposed theater versus other redevelopment projects will be considered at the June 16 Council session. Greenbelt Alliance will continue to support this project that will revitalize the downtown.

March 2008
The Livermore City Council did not meet in February to review the proposed Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center as originally planned. This delay is to allow for the developers to complete their financial study and submit it to the City for peer review. The council has not yet scheduled a meeting to review the project. The city still intends to prepare a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report that will cover an updated Specific Plan and analyze an alternative site.

The supplemental report will be available in mid 2008 and amendments are scheduled for fall 2008. Greenbelt Alliance will continue to monitor the project and testify when necessary.

December 2007
At the December 10 City Council meeting, Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center representatives and consultants gave an update on the proposed regional theater in downtown.

Many residents expressed their support for the project. Greenbelt Alliance testified in support of the theater to endorse Friends of Livermore in their efforts to get the theater approved.

The Arts Center will continue its construction financing and fundraising plans. The City staff will continue to work on financial details of the project, will prepare a supplemental Environmental Impact Report and will amend the Downtown Specific Plan. Staff anticipates returning to the City Council with another status report in February.
