AFFORDABLE HOMES IN MARIN
Greenbelt Alliance is building support for strong county-wide and city-specific policies for affordable housing during the Housing Element updates that will continue through this summer. We are primarily focusing on the cities along Highway 101: Novato, San Rafael, Corte Madera, and Larkspur. These communities are the locations of future SMART train stations and where current transportation options are; we're advocating for more homes people can afford and building support for better neighborhoods close to transit.
PLANNING FOR SANTA ROSA GROWTH
Santa Rosa, Sonoma County’s largest city, will see the creation of more than 20,000 new homes in the next 20 years –- over 5,000 of which will be clustered around the new SMART train stations. It is critical that these include affordable homes. To ensure this, Greenbelt Alliance, as part of the Accountable Development Coalition, has signed a letter calling for revisions to Santa Rosa’s inclusionary ordinance and other policies in the Housing Allocation Plan.
SMART PASSES!
Success! After many years of hard work by many people throughout the North Bay, the SMART Train and pathway have finally been supported by voters! Measure Q passed last November with 69.5% of the vote, and the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit Agency now has funding secured to start work. While the train is not projected to be up and running until 2013, the passage of Measure Q has given a much-needed go-ahead to cities along the rail line to move forward on plans for transit-oriented development.
Greenbelt Alliance will continue to work with the SMART Agency to ensure that SMART moves forward as quickly as possible as an environmentally friendly project, and that cities along the route are taking advantage of this important transit infrastructure in planning for future growth.
