"PREVENTING SPRAWL"
REPORT
We are excited to announce the completion of our report: Preventing
Sprawl: Farmers and Environmentalists Working Together. Over the past
two years, Greenbelt Alliance and the Sonoma County Farm Bureau have led
a committee of agricultural and environmental leaders in an unprecedented
collaboration to survey land-use patterns in the County in an effort to
prescribe strategies for preventing sprawl and protecting agriculture.
The committee sponsored a release event for elected officials, city and
county staff and various stakeholders on March 25, 2004. The full report,
titled Preventing
Sprawl: Farmers and Environmentalists Working Together, is available
on our website.
What's at Stake
The project gave Greenbelt Alliance and agricultural groups an opportunity
to work together and look critically at land use policies in the area.
This helps us build a foundation for productive partnerships in protecting
open space and promoting livable communities far into the future.

Campaign Update
May 2005
Greenbelt Alliance and the Sonoma County Farm Bureau are developing a
community outreach presentation based on our joint report entitled Preventing
Sprawl: Farmers and Environmentalists Working Together. In the coming
year, the presentation will be used to build support for smart growth
policies with local decision makers and community groups throughout the
county.
September 2004
Preventing Sprawl: Farmers and Environmentalists Working Together,
the report Greenbelt Alliance published in March in collaboration with
the Sonoma County Farm Bureau and other environmental and agricultural
leaders continues to receive a positive reception from key stakeholders
in Sonoma County. In the coming months, we expect both communities will
discuss how to actively pursue the policy goals in the report together.
March 2004
We successfully released our new land use report in late March. Over 100
elected officials, city and county staff, and various stakeholders attended
our release celebration on March 25.
November 2003
The Sonoma County Land Use Audit will be released in early 2004. Our hope
is the project will serve as a model for other regions of how different
interest groups can cooperate to ensure that development preserves agriculture
and protects the environment.
April 2003
Work on the land use audit continues to progress. The report is expected
to be released in September. Check back here for updates.
January 2002
