Message from the Editor
Hello Greenbelt Alliance members and friends. Great news: Governor Davis signed AB-857, the bill that we asked you to support during the last issue of Newswire. Thank you for taking action and doing your part to promote smart growth statewide. Check out the press release entitled Governor Signs Growth Planning Bills, 09/29/2002. We'll do our part to keep you informed on important campaigns in this and future Newswires. In the meantime, enjoy the fall weather on a Greenbelt Outing.

Cast Your Vote
On November 5, Bay Area and California residents will vote on a range of ballot measures related to environmental protection, affordable housing, and transportation. Some of these measures will protect the Bay Area greenbelt and promote livable communities, but other measures may have the opposite effect.

Community Influence on Bay Area Growth
After spending three years and more than $1.5 million, Bay Area elected officials unveiled a smart growth vision for the region in mid-October. The broadly worded vision sets out smart growth goals, but stops short of adopting tangible plans for reaching them.

Bay Area Endangered Spaces—A Photo Essay
Why is Mount Diablo at risk? Are suburban sprawl and loss of open space inevitable? How can you be a catalyst for change? If these are questions you would like to explore, check out a preview of Richard Rollins' photo exhibit, "Endangered Spaces: A Chronicle of Land Use and Open Space Preservation in the San Francisco Bay Area."
