Las Vegas in the North Bay?
A local Native American tribe and a Las Vegas developer have proposed to build a casino on 2,000 acres of scenic open space and farmland fronting San Francisco Bay in southern Sonoma County. Greenbelt Alliance believes that no development, casino or otherwise, is appropriate for this site.

Promoting "Smart Growth" Developments
Endorsing well-planned developments is one way Greenbelt Alliance achieves its goals of protecting the greenbelt and promoting livable communities. Our volunteer Compact Development Team reviews development proposals and supports those that meet a strict set of criteria, including being located near services and public transit in existing urban or suburban areas.

Greenbelt Alliance Origins: "Room Enough" for Housing and Open Space
2003 marks the forty-fifth anniversary of Greenbelt Alliance's work to protect open space and promote livable communities. Throughout this year we are highlighting our history in the Newswire.

East Bay Field Representative Search
Greenbelt Alliance is looking to hire a new East Bay Field Representative to lead advocacy efforts to stop sprawl and encourage smart growth in Contra Costa and Alameda counties. He/She will provide leadership on our critical efforts to protect farmland and open space, encourage affordable infill development, and invest in effective transportation solutions.

Upcoming Outings & Events
August 9: Greenbelt Outing: Grape Vines and Tidal Marsh
August 17: Greenbelt Outing: Urban Habitat Ride
August 24: Greenbelt Outing: Gallinas Creek Canoe
