The Northern California Section of the American Planning Association has selected Greenbelt Alliance's report, Smart Infill: Creating More Livable Communities in the Bay Area, for its 2003 Education Project Award. Greenbelt Alliance will receive the award at the American Planning Association's Awards Banquet at 7 PM on Friday May 30, 2003 at the Faculty Club on the campus of UC Berkeley, in Berkeley, CA.
"The Smart Infill report has been used by city councils and planning commissions in the Bay Area and throughout California to promote well-designed, livable communities," says Janet Stone, Livable Communities Director for Greenbelt Alliance.
Smart Infill is a guidebook about how development within existing cities and towns—especially infill development and mixed-use development—can help revitalize communities and accommodate the future growth of the Bay Area. The report was researched and written by Stephen M. Wheeler, Ph.D., AICP, a UC Berkeley professor of urban planning, in coordination with Greenbelt Alliance staff.
"Taking the initiative to create a high-quality resource is consistent with Greenbelt Alliance's past leadership in promoting smarter, more sustainable development," says Gerald E. Raycraft, Planning Director for the Association of Bay Area Governments. "Indeed, the Smart Infill guidebook should continue to be an invaluable tool for educating civic leaders about how they might implement policies and programs in their own communities."
