In this edition Volunteer of the Month: Zena Meadowsong Zena Meadowsong, Greenbelt Alliance’s volunteer photo archivist, says her path to volunteering began with her dissertation. She studied the impact of mechanization on the novel in the 19th and 20th centuries, and thought a lot about the impacts of human attempts to control the natural world. The result? She “started to compost, went organic, and applied to volunteer for Greenbelt Alliance.” When Zena, a lecturer at Stanford, had a quarter off this spring, she offered to help out at Greenbelt Alliance in any way that was needed. She started off with a variety of much-needed administrative tasks, then moved on to tackle a bigger project: translating our vast photo archives into digital format. (Greenbelt Alliance has been around almost 50 years, and has amassed a lot of photographs!) Zena didn’t even blink at the towering piles; she just donned her iPod and tackled the job, sorting through the photos and scanning more than 200 of the best. These newly available photos will be a great help in communicating about Greenbelt Alliance’s work, illustrating the lands we work to save and the threats that face them. Thank you, Zena! Action Alert: Vote for Greenbelt Alliance With just the click of a mouse, you can win $5,000 for Greenbelt Alliance! Clothing retailer Patagonia is opening a new store in Palo Alto and is giving people the chance to vote for a local environmental organization to receive a $5,000 check at the opening of the store on July 14. Only one organization can win – make it Greenbelt Alliance! Vote today, and pass it on! We need as many people to vote as possible! That $5,000 could do a lot. It could help Greenbelt Alliance save over 500 acres of open space—far more cheaply than buying the same amount of land—by encouraging better development and stopping sprawl. But only if you vote! Be sure to vote by July 9, 2007. Update: Smart Growth Scorecard Wins Award! Greenbelt Alliance's report Bay Area Smart Growth Scorecard has been chosen to receive the 2007 Education Project Award from the regional chapter of the American Planning Association. The Smart Growth Scorecard was released a year ago to significant media attention. The report evaluated all 101 cities and 9 counties in the Bay Area, breaking new ground in the effort to prepare the region for coming growth. The APA award recognizes the report's effectiveness at educating people about the importance of good planning. Since the report’s release, Greenbelt Alliance has been working with elected leaders and Bay Area residents to help cities and counties adopt better policies to manage growth and improve the region’s quality of life. Update: Go Greenbelt! Crosses the Finish Line Go Greenbelt!, Greenbelt Alliance’s week-long Bay Area bike tour, is over. The riders returned on Sunday to San Francisco, tired and triumphant after pedaling 480 miles around the region, seeing the region's hills, forests, wildflower fields—and threats of sprawl—firsthand. The riders had a great time and great weather (with the notable exception of Mount Hamilton, where it was a chilly 42 degrees!). They got to learn about the region’s landscapes and also got to act—for instance, at last Friday’s press event, riders joined local leaders in calling for a better plan for Santa Rosa’s downtown.
