In this edition At today’s 1:30 meeting of the state Legislature’s Budget Conference Committee, the state will gather views on the fate of our parks. The governor has proposed closing 80% of the state’s parks, claiming it will help close the budget gap. This makes no sense. Closing parks would save only 0.6%—that’s six one-thousandths—of the funds needed to close the budget gap. But closing beloved parks, from Mount Tam to Angel Island to Henry Coe, would have a major effect on people’s lives and on local economies.
By 2035, roughly two million more people will live here in the Bay Area. That growth can be an opportunity. On June 10, Greenbelt Alliance will release Grow Smart Bay Area, a vision for how our region can grow sustainably, creating better neighborhoods while protecting vital lands. Will we make it happen? Event: Bluegrass for the Greenbelt June 28 Seven bluegrass bands will take to two stages at this year’s Bluegrass for the Greenbelt on Sunday, June 28. The fourth annual benefit concert features chart-toppers The Waybacks, Grammy award-winner Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands, the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, and the Wronglers. On a second stage, Nell Robinson and Red Level, 49 Special, and Eric and Suzy Thompson will perform. Tickets are on sale now for this family-friendly day of music, children’s activities, prizes, and silent auction items. Success: A Step toward Protecting Coyote Valley On May 26, the San Jose Envision 2040 task force voted to not include Coyote Valley and the South Almaden Valley in the city's study of where future homes and jobs can go.
Success: Cloverdale Maps Line Around City On May 13, after four years of deliberation, the Cloverdale City Council adopted a new General Plan that includes plans for an urban growth boundary to protect hills and farmland around Sonoma County’s northernmost city. The line still needs to be tightened, as it stretches two miles south to Asti, despite a petition signed by more than one hundred local residents asking for a tighter line. This is a major step forward for Sonoma County, even though we still have work to do on the line. This grassroots campaign was led by outgoing Senior Field Representative Daisy Pistey-Lyhne. Event: Sign up for Climate Change Classes this Summer San Francisco Planning and Urban Research (SPUR), in partnership with Greenbelt Alliance, is launching its Citizens Planning Institute with a five-class series called "Urbanism: The Convenient Solution to the Problem of Climate Change." Greenbelt Alliance Policy Director Stephanie Reyes will present on a range of topics addressing climate-friendly land use and development. Morgan Hill Approves Homes in Downtown Victory! Voters in Morgan Hill said yes to Measure A, which will allow for more homes to be built in the city’s downtown core and fewer on the rural edge. Greenbelt Alliance endorsed the May 19 initiative for its elegant combination of protecting agricultural lands while encouraging vibrant downtown development.
Volunteer of the Month: Kat Mullins Our June volunteer of the month is intern Kat Mullins. A graduate of Lewis & Clark, Kat tackled a research project linking compact infill development to Bay Area water issues. Drawing on her background in environmental studies and her ability to synthesize wide-ranging research, Kat explored the impact of suburban sprawl on local watersheds. This research provides valuable information to ensure that as the region grows, our water supply remains clean and plentiful. Thanks, Kat, for helping the Bay Area grow smart!
