Greenbelt Alliance In the News
December 14, 2005 What is the petitioners'
vision? Letter to the Editor BylineEditor, Now that signatures have been turned in and a vote on Bay Meadows Phase II seems likely, it is important to remember that this project is already the result of a lengthy and involved community process. For five years, citizens have participated in nearly 100 meetings, helping to craft a model smart growth community that will contribute to the overall quality of life in San Mateo. The project will provide needed housing close to jobs, shops and transit, so people arent dependent on their cars. Instead of acres of parking lots, the project will provide acres of public parks. The project will also help protect the hillsides and farmlands that make San Mateo, and all of the Bay Area, such a great place to live. Developments like Bay Meadows Phase II make room for our growing population within our existing cities, not on the greenbelt. Together, local citizens and their elected leaders have already created a clear vision for this neighborhood. That vision has been supported by Greenbelt Alliance, the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, the San Mateo Chamber of Commerce and the Housing Leadership Council. It takes a good project to get us all to agree. If Bay Meadows Phase II is not allowed to move forward, then what is the alternative? The racetrack will not continue as it is now. Do the petition filers have a realistic vision for the future of Bay Meadows? Michele Beasley The letter writer is the South Bay Field Representative for the Greenbelt Alliance. ### |
