Traffic coalition offers alternatives to taxes

Letter to the Editor

Solano transportation officials are considering another attempt to pass a transportation sales tax that could either threaten or protect our quality of life in Solano County.

Fair and Safe Traffic Solutions, a coalition formed by Greenbelt Alliance, the Solano Orderly Growth Committee and local elected officials has proposed a sensible transportation platform as an alternative to the failed transportation taxes of the past few years.

The goal of the sensible transportation platform is to make sure that our taxpayer investments in transportation don't lead to out-of-control growth in Solano County's working farms and natural areas.

Expanding highways without managing new growth will waste our taxpayer dollars, increase traffic, and degrade our quality of life. Out-of-control growth threatens the scenic valleys and working farms around our cities and leads to even worse traffic.

Fair and Safe Traffic Solutions is proposing that each city clearly delineate where future growth will occur before it gets its share of our regional transportation investments.

Solano County is already the fastest growing county in the Bay Area. Before Solano taxpayers are asked to pay to open the floodgates to more growth, we need a clear picture of where growth will occur for the life of the sales tax.

We deserve to know what we're paying for.
