Greenbelt Alliance In the NewsMarch 29, 2007 Letter to the editor Suisun Valley a poor site for school I am deeply concerned about a proposal for a "free" school site in the heart of Suisun Valley. This might appear to be a great deal for the school district, but a closer look reveals a true price that is much too high. Here's why: -- Our children's health - this remote location would mean no children could walk or bike to school. Instead, buses and cars would bring every student. That would reduce the amount of exercise our kids could get and would increase pollution around the school. Solano County already has some of the state's highest rates of asthma and obesity. Let's not exacerbate these problems. A recent letter to the editor of the Daily Republic "Childhood obesity can be prevented," March 14 suggested more physical activity for our kids. Building a school that our kids can walk or bike to is a good way to help. Additionally, vineyards near the proposed site spray chemicals and sulfur; why would we expose our kids to toxic sprays? -- The voters' wishes - In 2003, Fairfield voters adopted an urban growth boundary putting Suisun Valley off limits to development. This would break that trust. -- Our county's prime agricultural land - Building here would open up the area for further development, speeding the loss of the county's remaining farmland. The recent Measure J election made it clear that voters want to save our farms, not pave them. This is just another development proposal, cloaked as "free land for a school." Don't be fooled. We need to find another site, one without such a high price tag. Building on prime farmland is not the answer and neither is cutting off transportation options for kids. We can do better than that.
