Greenbelt Alliance In the NewsApril 9, 2008 West County well represented in annual Environmental Awards
Sonoma County environmentalists gathered recently at the Sebastopol Veteran’s Memorial Building with more than 200 strong in attendance for the annual awards conducted by the Sonoma County Conservation Council (SCCC). The (SCCC), a federation of 17 groups that operates the Environmental Center in Santa Rosa, has been running this awards series since 1975. Nominations are solicited from all over Sonoma County though voting is limited to members of the SCCC groups. The event theme was “Green Leadership – Honoring Elders, Showcasing Youth.” Honorees this year included Daisy Pistey-Lyhne of Greenbelt Alliance, Brenda Adelman of the Russian River Watershed Protection Committee, the Climate Protection Campaign and the Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy, among 10 others receiving honorable mentions. Rohnert Park Mayor Jake Mackenzie, the Master of Ceremonies, and Sebastopol Mayor Craig Litwin presented the awards with SCCC Awards Committee Chairperson Portia Sinnott. Award certificates were collaboratively produced and signed by State Senator Pat Wiggins, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Assembly Members Noreen Evans and Patty Berg. Sonoma Co unty Tomorrow founders were also honored especially the late Iva Warner and Adrienne Swenson. Tim Dondero, Founder of Sonoma State University’s Sustainability Coalition and Nicole Caughell, Chair of Santa Rosa Junior College’s From Green Within Club, presented their vision for the future and discussed their respective campus activities. Both did a great job! Also in attendance were 7th District Assembly Member Noreen Evans, Sebastopol Mayor Craig Litwin and Council Member Sarah Gurney, Santa Rosa Council Members Veronica Jacobi and Susan Gorin, Windsor Mayor Debora Fudge, SRJC Trustee Marsha Vas Dupre and Harmony Union School District Board Member Denny Rosaetti, plus a good number of candidates. In Black, Sonoma County’s climate-conscious youth jazz band, provided musical entertainment. The event was produced by Green Synergy, a team of green event organizers lead by Portia Sinnott including Wendy Krupnick, June Michaels, Suzi O’Rear and others. Pistey-Lyhne was named “Environmentalist of the Year” and Adelman was awarded the Ernestine I. Smith Lifetime Environmental Commitment award. Maitreyi Siruguri, program coordinator for the Climate Protection Campaign’s Cools Schools Program, accepted the Outstanding Environmental Education Program award for the group. ### |
