Get a design for success

Letter to the Editor

The Mercury News editorial on design is absolutely correct ("Towers project must be designed for success," Editorial, Aug. 26). Good design is a fundamental component of thoughtful urban development. Simply placing more homes and jobs near public transit does not create a great neighborhood. Residents have every right to want quality park space, bike lanes and trails, and attractive sidewalks and storefronts. These details make current residents feel that new development has improved their quality of life, which in turn attracts newcomers. It is critical that San Jose's leaders ensure that good plans are transformed into great places that are vibrant, walkable and attractive. Otherwise, the city ends up with more buildings and uninviting streets.
