Strong Community Support Prompts Action LivermoreAfter thirty years of debate over development in North Livermore, the Livermore City Council Monday night approved an urban growth boundary (UGB) that will protect open space and agricultural lands on the city's edge. "This is a major victory for Livermore residents who want to protect the open space on the edge of town and revitalize the downtown area," says Evvy Stivers, East Bay Field Representative for Greenbelt Alliance. "There is room enough within city limits for infill development to meet the city's needs for housing, office space, and retail stores". November 2003 ballot initiative to establish the UGB. Initiative backers
recently submitted more than 10,500 signatures to the Alameda County elections
The City Council vote establishes a boundary for North Livermore and
part of east Livermore that prohibits urban development outside the boundary
without approval from voters at the ballot box. The council action builds
