Local Measure Gets Regional Support

Greenbelt Alliance Endorses Livermore Initiative

Livermore—Greenbelt Alliance has officially endorsed the urban growth boundary initiative for North Livermore that is currently being circulated for signatures by Friends of Livermore.

The "Preserve Livermore's Environment" measure would establish an urban growth boundary in North Livermore and create a transfer of development credit program to offer incentives for development in downtown Livermore. The measure is likely to be placed before voters on the November 2003 ballot.

"This measure is good for Livermore," says Zach Cowan, a Greenbelt Alliance board member who has worked on land use issues in the Tri-Valley. "It will protect open space and stimulate the revitalization of downtown."

Livermore has in place a voter-approved urban growth boundary for its southern border, but its northern edge remains vulnerable to sprawl development pressure. The "Preserve Livermore's Environment" measure would safeguard Livermore's northern border and provide transfer of development credits to reimburse local landowners who protect their land from sprawl development.
