Press ReleaseApril 22, 2003 Contact: Bicyclists, environmentalists rally against Representative Pombo's proposed highway through the Diablo Range wilderness Subheading 50+ Bicyclists on Weeklong Bay Area Tour Will Dramatize
Effects of Sprawl-Inducing Road WHAT: Rally and street theater to highlight the folly and wastefulness of the proposal to build a highway through the rugged wilderness and wildlife habitat of the Diablo Range. WHEN: Sorry, EVENT CANCELLED due to inclement weather. Tuesday, April 29th WHERE: Joseph D. Grant County Park, located 12 miles east of downtown San Jose in the beautiful foothills of Mt. Hamilton. See directions below. WHY: Congressman Richard Pombo (R-Tracy) is seeking federal funding to study his proposal to construct a 4-lane highway through the Diablo Range from east San Jose to the Central Valley. The highway would not only slice through the habitats of several threatened and endangered species, but also divert funding away other urgent transportation priorities and induce sprawl development far from job centers. This event coincides with Go Greenbelt!, the 480-mile Bay Area bike tour sponsored by Greenbelt Alliance. DIRECTIONS: From Hwy. 101 or Hwy. 680 take the Alum Rock Ave. exit eastward. 2.2 miles from 680, turn right (south) on Mt. Hamilton Rd. (Hwy. 130) and go 7.7 miles to the park. Turn right into the park entrance (18405 Hamilton Rd.). Follow signs to rally location. Park office phone: 408-274-6121. ### For 50 years, Greenbelt Alliance has been the San Francisco Bay Area's advocate for open spaces and vibrant places, with offices in San Francisco, San Jose, Walnut Creek, Fairfield, and Santa Rosa. www.greenbelt.org
