Go Greenbelt! 480-mile Bay Area bike tour highlights open space and farmland at risk

Photo Opportunities

San Francisco—More than 50 bicyclists will participate in Greenbelt Alliance's fourteenth annual Go Greenbelt! bicycle tour through the nine counties of the Bay Area, beginning Sunday, April 27 at 9 am, at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.

"Go Greenbelt! is a 480 mile trek around the Bay Area that highlights protected open space and agricultural lands as well as areas at risk of development," says Steve Van Landingham, the Development Director of Greenbelt Alliance who will participate in the ride. "Go Greenbelt! is one of the premier biking events in the Bay Area because it combines scenic beauty and challenging rides with education about threats to the greenbelt."

This year's ride will feature more than 50 brightly dressed Go Greenbelt! cyclists riding along scenic bluffs, ascending rolling hills, and cruising through vineyards and farmland. The ride goes from San Francisco in a counter-clockwise circuit around the Bay Area, with overnight stops in Los Gatos, San Jose, Livermore, Fairfield, Santa Rosa, and Olema (see map and additional information about the ride online at www.greenbelt.org).

There are several excellent press opportunities along the way, including:
...Sunday April 27, 9 am, St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco—the ride begins
...Tuesday April 29, 9:30 am, Joseph D. Grant County Park east of San Jose—bike riders and environmentalists rally against the proposed highway through the Diablo Range
...Thursday May 1, 9 am, downtown Santa Rosa—bike riders and local residents call attention to the need for affordable housing in Sonoma County
...Saturday May 3, 1:30 pm, the Presidio in San Francisco—bike ride ends with a picnic at the Thoreau Center for Sustainability
