Bay Area Bike Tour Stops In Livermore,
Joins Environmental Leaders In Opposing Development Initiative

Livermore, CA - Dozens of bicyclists on a 480-mile Bay Area bike tour will join local community leaders in opposing an initiative to move Livermore's Urban Growth Boundary Wednesday, May 11 at 10 am. They will speak in front of the rolling hills where the development is proposed, at Hartford Avenue and Lorraine Street, north of I-580 and east of North Livermore Ave.

"This initiative would move Livermore's Urban Growth Boundary outward so a developer can build on currently protected land. It would cause terrible environmental damage," said David Reid, East Bay Field Representative for Greenbelt Alliance. "That's why Greenbelt Alliance, the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club, and the California Native Plant Society are united in opposing this initiative."

The California Native Plant Society and Sierra Club both announced their opposition to the initiative, which would move the city's Urban Growth Boundary to allow development of up to 2,450 housing units on a contentious, environmentally sensitive site north of I-580.

Bicycle riders participating in Greenbelt Alliance's sixteenth annual Go Greenbelt! bike tour will be joining the local environmental groups to oppose the development on rural land. Every year, the riders don bright jerseys and set out on a weeklong tour of the region to take stock of threats to the Bay Area's greenbelt of farms and natural areas, raising funds and awareness as they go.

Speaking at Friday's event will be Greenbelt Alliance's David Reid and representatives of the Friends of Livermore Coalition, Sierra Club, and California Native Plant Society.
