Destination Downtown: Creating a Livable Community

An Urban Outing in San Jose sponsored by Greenbelt Alliance

San Jose is undergoing major redevelopment in its downtown. These plans could turn San Jose away from its sprawling past, toward a future full of vibrant neighborhoods. Learn from local experts about the city's smart growth and its opportunities for the future.

WHAT: Join Greenbelt Alliance for a presentation and walking tour of downtown San Jose. The outing will visit critical components of a successful urban center, including compact residential development, transit options, cultural activities, a park, historic buildings and small businesses. We will also explore opportunities to create an even more vibrant community using the principles of smart growth.

Speakers include:

  • Cindy Chavez, San Jose Vice Mayor/City Council Member
  • Laurel Prevetti, Deputy Director, San Jose Planning Department
  • Lee Butler, Project Manager, San Jose Planning Department
  • Diane Olmstead, Principal, Investment & Development, CIM Group
  • Dennis Korabiak, Program Manager, San Jose Redevelopment Agency
  • Chris Augenstein, Transportation Planning Manager, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
  • Michele Beasley, South Bay Field Representative, Greenbelt Alliance.

A light breakfast will be provided. The event is co-sponsored by the South Bay RAC of the American Planning Association's California Chapter.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 24, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

WHERE: Meet at the new City Hall, Room W118, located at 200 East Santa Clara Street (between 4th and 6th Streets)

WHO: San Jose community leaders, residents, and others interested in open space and revitalized communities are encouraged to attend. The tour is free.
RSVP appreciated; call (415) 543-6771 or email jcummins@greenbelt.org.
