Hike Highlights Benefits of Rail Transit in North Bay
Greenbelt Alliance leads October 25 outing
October 25, 2008 – Join Greenbelt Alliance for an excursion along the proposed Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train route before the vote November 4.
WHAT: The SMART walk is a 5-mile round-trip urban hike. It will show how the train will connect to towns and transit, and participants will view some of the natural areas that will be visible from the trail along the tracks.
WHEN: Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
WHERE: Hikers will follow the tracks southward from the San Rafael Transit Depot to the tunnel that will link San Rafael to the Larkspur ferry, and then return to San Rafael via the existing bike path to view recent redevelopment of downtown San Rafael. Meet at 10 a.m. at the San Rafael Transit Depot, on 3rd Street, between Hetherton Street and Tamalpais Avenue.
WHY: Greenbelt Alliance endorses the SMART initiative, Measure Q, which provides a transportation alternative for North Bay residents and will reduce greenhouse gas pollution by reducing traffic on congested Highway 101. The outing, which will be led by Greenbelt Alliance Field Representative Daisy Pistey-Lyhne and Transportation Program Director Carli Paine of the Transportation and Land Use Coalition, provides an opportunity to see how the train will connect workers to their workplaces.
DETAILS: This free, 5-mile walk is along mostly level terrain. Reservations are required; heavy rain cancels. Bring good walking shoes and dress in layers, and pack snacks, lunch, and liquids. To RSVP, call (415) 255-3233 or visit www.greenbelt.org/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi.
