Open Space Protection
|
Why is it important?
The Bay Area's greenbelt is a broad band of open
lands that surrounds the cities and towns of the nine county San
Francisco Bay Area. It is one of the largest and most productive
systems of open space in any U.S. metropolitan region. Learn
more about the Bay Area's greenbelt.

At Greenbelt Alliance, we believe that the key to preserving precious open
space and farmland lies within our cities and suburbs. To protect our greenbelt,
we must take action on two fronts: we must draw the line on sprawl; and
we must encourage smart growth inside that line, within our existing communities.
How Greenbelt Alliance protects open
space:
- We advocate for good planning in Bay Area cities and counties that
directs public and private investment into existing communities instead
of into development in the greenbelt.
- We provide policy recommendations to regional transportation, open
space, environmental, and intra-governmental agencies in order to find
solutions that transcend local jurisdictions.
- We oppose wasteful, sprawling developments that eat up precious greenbelt
lands.
- We endorse development projects that offer housing units other than
single family residential and include affordable housing.
