Mountain View City Council candidates talk housing & transportation

On Tuesday night, over 120 Mountain View residents packed into the Rengstorff Park Community Center for the Housing & Transportation Candidates Forum, co-sponsored by Greenbelt Alliance. Attendees heard from the nine candidates vying for three open seats on the Mountain View City Council this November.

The potential councilmembers shared their thoughts on how to improve safety for pedestrians and the increasing number of bike commuters, how to make housing more affordable in one of the most expensive regions in the country, and many other topics. Most surprisingly, while city staff and current councilmembers have shied away from discussing Bus Rapid Transit on El Camino Real and housing in the North Bayshore area, that was not the case on Tuesday night—most of the nine candidates made their stance on both issues clear. These two issues are particularly important since the City Council will be discussing the neighborhood plans for both El Camino and North Bayshore this month, with adoption expected in November. Watch the candidates forum in full below.

The El Camino Real Precise Plan will be discussed at the September 23 city council meeting. It will be critical for community members to attend—comments from this meeting will influence the City’s final plan.

Greenbelt Alliance and our partners—the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, Peninsula Interfaith Action, and the Mountain View Coalition for Sustainable Planning—urge you to join us at the meeting in support of a vibrant El Camino Corridor. Read our policy platform [PDF].
