The Wilderness Next Door

This year marks the 100th birthday of the National Park Service. Yellowstone and Yosemite are known and loved by all, but how much do you know about the nearby national parks we visit on Greenbelt Alliance outings?

Take an armchair photographic tour of the Marin Headlands and Muir Woods to learn about the natural and cultural history of our local national parks. We’ll include fascinating but little known anecdotes about the land and people in this “wilderness next door.”

Did you know that when you hike to the top of Mount Diablo, you’re actually walking on a piece of the Marin Headlands? Or that Muir Woods’ famous “Kent Tree,” dedicated to the man who saved the redwood forest from being chopped down, was actually a Douglas fir? From lighthouses to Nike missiles to banana slugs, we’ll cover it all.  If we’ve peaked your interest, consider joining us on Sunday, November 13, for our Muir Woods outing.
