Greenbelt Alliance Endorsed: Karlstad in Sunnyvale

Greenbelt Alliance is pleased to endorse the Karlstad project in Sunnyvale’s Fair Oaks neighborhood.

Since the 1990s, the Fair Oaks neighborhood has been transitioning from an aging industrial area to a community with new opportunities to live near transit and jobs in the bustling Silicon Valley. Karlstad, by The Sobrato Organization, takes a smart approach to fulfill this vision, providing 250 new homes for residents across the income spectrum within walking distance to the Fair Oaks Light Rail station.

Taking advantage of its convenient location near transit, Karlstad offers ample bicycle parking and will create new sidewalks on a street lacking basic pedestrian amenities. It also contributes to Sunnyvale’s “Sense of Place Plan,” which funds pedestrian, bicycle and place-making improvements in the Fair Oaks neighborhood.

Karlstad sets a high bar for green building. The project features numerous sustainable design features, including preservation of heritage trees and recycled water, and will be securing “Build It Green” certification.

As a great example of smart infill development, Karlstad supports the local economy, relieves development pressure on the region’s open spaces, and offers a host of other environmental and quality of life benefits.
