2021 Annual Report

A MESSAGE FROM THE GREENBELT
ALLIANCE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Working in the field of climate resilience means living with uncertainty. As we plan for the future and work to build a more resilient, equitable society, we grapple with how much we don’t know about what the future holds, especially as we see the intensification of climate hazards. Grappling with this uncertainty can be one of our biggest challenges—people are accustomed to looking to leaders in the field for answers! In our case, this means finding the right answer to how we best protect our land and people. Expressing uncertainty while also advocating for our best answers to the challenges we face as a region is a careful line we’ve been managing over time.

Looking back on the last year, I believe the legacy of 2021 will be the dawning realization that our future holds more and bigger challenges with uncertain answers. This is certainly the case with the pandemic. Even here in the Bay Area, where there is a strong consensus to follow the science, there are wildly different assessments of what that means, sometimes causing much consternation and conflict. As we face the big challenges ahead, we must learn to adapt more quickly, integrate new information and shift courses when necessary, accept uncertainty, and work together.

In reflecting on 2021, I am particularly proud of how the Greenbelt Alliance team adapted to the challenges of the year and of our work. We’ve long advocated for greenbelts around cities—this year we showed how those greenbelts can serve as powerful wildfire buffers, providing added benefits and protection to people and wildlife. We’ve consistently pushed cities to adopt stronger policies to protect the natural and working lands that surround us, while investing in vibrant, equitable communities—this year we developed a dynamic Resilience Playbook to make that easier. We have consistently advocated for more homes to be built within our existing cities and towns, particularly transit-oriented development, affordable to all. This year we’ve expanded our advocacy to adding more homes throughout our communities, in all neighborhoods, regardless of proximity to public transportation. We’ve learned that just focusing new homes downtown and near transit is not enough to address the severe housing shortage and stem the extreme negative environmental impacts of increasing sprawl. So we’ve adapted our advocacy efforts, making changes when we learn new information.

We’ve been heartened this year to see elected leaders and other city officials stepping up to take on the challenges of the pandemic, the lack of affordable housing, and the looming impacts of climate change. To name a few, leaders in Livermore, Sunnyvale, Belmont, and Hayward approved new homes to welcome more residents into their communities. Leaders in Berkeley and South San Francisco eliminated exclusionary zoning in their communities, paving the way for statewide action. Leaders in San José and Sonoma County took steps to protect thousands of acres of vital open space, crucial to the health of our ecosystems and for building climate resilience.

We’ve been through a few challenging years, and as we look to the future, we know that trajectory will continue. At the same time, we are hopeful that these examples of leadership will continue to flourish. We look forward to continued collaboration with all of our supporters, to continuing to expand our network of climate and land-use advocates, and to supporting and building up the leaders we need to take on the challenges of the future.

“We have got to refocus our resources on city-centered housing that is near transit and away from our working lands. we can’t afford to lose another acre of farmland in Sonoma County.”

Intersectional Work for a Resilient Bay Area

Bay Area is Short 160,000 Affordable Homes

San Francisco Chronicle

These headlines from 2021 about the region’s housing and climate crises, which at one time would have been alarming, are becoming part of the regular news cycle. Now is not the time to become complacent. With the housing divide widening, wildfire seasons extending, and sea levels continuing to rise, Greenbelt Alliance has stepped up to tackle these crises together in order to create a climate-resilient Bay Area.

In 2021, we did this by creating tools like The Critical Role of Greenbelts in Wildfire Resilience white paper and the Resilience Playbook website. These resources translate climate-smart thinking into governing guidance for organizers, city planners, and elected leaders that provide actionable recommendations to address both the housing and climate crises our Bay Area communities are facing.

The impact of this intersectional work can be measured by the nearly 3,700 acres of natural and working lands protected in Napa, Tesla Park (Alameda County), and Coyote Valley (Santa Clara County). It can be measured by the 2,100+ new climate SMART—Sustainable, Mixed, Affordable, Resilient, Transit-Oriented—homes that Greenbelt Alliance endorsed in cities across the region.

And this work carries on well into the future, in places like Sonoma County, where our advocacy efforts led to the approval of the Vital Lands Initiative, which outlines strategies to preserve agriculture, natural resources, recreation, scenic vistas, greenbelt areas, and urban open space over the next 10 years. Where, regionally, our persistence resulted in the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Association of Bay Area Governments adopting the boldest version of Plan Bay Area ever—Plan Bay Area 2050—to address the region’s needs around housing, the economy, transportation, and the environment. And where, at the state level, we are seeing this work being addressed through new legislation and within Governor Newsom’s 30×30 initiative—an executive order to conserve 30% of the state’s lands and waters by 2030.

When we reflect on all that Greenbelt Alliance accomplished in 2021, it comes down to land-use decisions and leveraging the power of nature that, when addressed holistically, result in climate-resilient communities.

OUR IMPACT IN 2021

Hover over the icons in the following map to check out the impact we made throughout the Bay Area in 2021.

“I’ve been part of Greenbelt Alliance because I believe this is one of very few organizations in the Bay Area that deeply understand the connection between the natural and built environments, at both of the local and regional scales.”

Anu Natarajan, Housing Initiative Lead, Meta and Greenbelt Alliance Board member

Celebrating Our Work in Sonoma

In June, members of the Sonoma Leadership Council gathered at the beautiful McEvoy Ranch in Petaluma for our first in-person gathering since Covid-19 began. Guests were treated to a special olive oil tasting and farm-to-table lunch while they sipped on wine sourced directly from the ranch. During this special luncheon, we raised over $90,000 to support the work we’re doing to accelerate nature-based solutions that build resilience to climate change.

The Sonoma Leadership Council is made up of a group of supporters in the North Bay who donate $1,000 annually towards the work we do in the region. Please contact Nora Cullinen at ncullinen@greenbelt.org if you are interested in learning more about membership.

Honoring Hidden Heroes
of the Greenbelt

On September 30, supporters, partners, and friends of Greenbelt Alliance joined us virtually for our inaugural benefit, Hidden Heroes of the Greenbelt. This year we honored three extraordinary leaders from across the Bay Area whose stories are inspiring and whose contribution to climate and land-use policies will leave a legacy of positive impact in the region:

1. Adria Arko, Climate & Agriculture Programs Manager & Agricultural Ombudsman, San Mateo Resource Conservation District was recognized for fostering nature-based climate adaptation.

2. Warren Logan, Policy Director of Mobility & Interagency Relations, Oakland Mayor’s Office was recognized for planning for resilience.

3. Michelle Whitman, Executive Director of Renewal Enterprise District in Santa Rosa was recognized for promoting abundant climate-smart housing.

Thanks to our amazing community, we raised over $250,000 and surpassed our goal!

You can learn more about our Hidden Heroes of the Greenbelt event here: greenbelt.org/hidden-heroes-of-the-greenbelt.
