About this Opportunity:

Greenbelt Alliance is seeking a Sea Level Rise Community Engagement Fellow to support community engagement efforts for climate adaptation planning in Alameda and Solano Counties.

The fellow will help advance community-centered resilience planning through two regional partnerships: the  Oakland Alameda Adaptation Committee (OAAC), Solano Bayshore Resilience Roundtable  as well as the Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Resilience Collaborative. These initiatives bring together local governments, community-based organizations, and residents to prepare frontline shoreline communities for the impacts of sea level rise and coastal flooding.

This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in climate resilience, community engagement, and regional collaboration while supporting real-world adaptation planning efforts across the East Bay shoreline.

What You’ll Be Working On

The Sea Level Rise Community Engagement Fellow will support community outreach and engagement activities, including:

  • Assisting with community workshops and meetings, including helping with event setup and breakdown, managing sign-in tables, interviewing participants, documenting activities, and taking photos.
  • Tabling at community events to share information about sea level rise adaptation projects and collect community input.
  • Supporting community surveys and outreach materials that gather feedback from residents and stakeholders about local climate resilience priorities.

Additional Opportunities

Depending on interest and availability, the Fellow may also assist with:

  • Supporting the Resilient Roots Climate Leaders Network Program in Oakland by helping develop pre-program and post-program surveys.
  • Assisting with StoryMap development and integrations for the Port of Oakland’s shoreline adaptation work.
  • Supporting data organization and documentation of engagement activities.
  • Writing blog posts and documenting outreach activities for social media

These opportunities will allow the Fellow to gain exposure to program evaluation, storytelling tools, and climate communication strategies.

Expectations

  • This is a part-time fellowship requiring approximately 10–15 hours per week from June through August 2026.
  • Ideally, you would come into our office one day a week (either Tuesday or Thursday), but not required.
  • The Fellow should be able to travel to Alameda and Solano Counties for in-person events.
  • A lot of the outreach work will happen on weekends and evenings. Availability for evening and weekend events is required.

Who Should Apply

We encourage applications from:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students or recent graduates
  • Students studying or interested in climate adaptation, environmental studies, urban planning, public policy, or community engagement
  • Individuals who are excited about working directly with communities on climate resilience solutions

Experience with community outreach, event coordination, or climate-related work is helpful but not required.
